Anderson Silva’s career is over. I would’ve been able to take some semblance of pleasure in writing that if he didn’t repeatedly redeem himself from the disgrace of a fight against Demian Maia in Abu Dhabi. If he would’ve broken his leg after that fight, his tombstone would read he was retired by karma. But that’s not what happened, post Chael Sonnen feud, Anderson Silva redeemed his reputation and legacy as the greatest fighter in the history of mixed martial arts (forgive me Fedor).

Silva’s injury (shown in above video) is as gruesome an injury as can occur in a sporting event. I saw it live at didn’t see the break until the replay, but I did notice the greatest mma fighter of all time throwing a simple low kick, then falling to ground, screaming in pain. I was equally sickened that the UFC went on business as usual, actually announcing Weidman as the winner with belt coronation by Dana White, then sending Joe Rogan to interview Weidman as if there was anything to intelligent to say. But UFC has learned much from WWE, and WWE has taught any live entertainment company that even if a performer falls from the top of the building to his death in front of your whole audience, scrape him off the mat, and keep moving forward.  Send a ham to the widow.

Anderson Silva was a prick for a few years, as many of the greatest of all time in their profession inevitably become for a little while. We can all thank Chael Sonnen for literally knocking some sense into him during their epic fight at UFC 117. Spider escaped that fight with his title and his pride, but thankfully left his ego behind. He became a gracious, quiet warrior, the perfect mma ambassador to the world. He netted the biggest sponsorship deals to date in the sport with Nike, Burger King, and Gatorade all putting logos on his flag and attire usually reserved for Tapout, Venom, and CondomDepot.com.

The sport is better for Spider’s dominance, more popular and respected due to his one man dynasty. The sport is worse now that he is gone. He may make a comeback fight, but a full comeback is out of the question, it’s impossible, he’s 38 not 28. If he chooses to fight again hopefully Dana White and the UFC will have the dignity to give him a feeder like they chose to not do during Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture’s swan songs in the octagon.

Spider Silva was and is a model for athletes and savants of all walks of life. Great talent comes with great responsibility. Not a responsibility to satiate one’s ego, but to become as great as possible to be remembered in history and to inspire those in the present to be their best as well. Spider Silva got there after taking a detour to douchebagville. He leaves the sport of mma not just rich, not just a legend, but as of now the greatest of all time.

Now let’s all be sure to thank Dana White for booking the Spider vs. GSP super fight two years ago when it was the right thing for the sport to do and he repeatedly said he would.  Thanks Dana!!!

It was all explained to me as the convergence of breeding and biotechnology, kinda like all those new condoms Trojan has been marketing for the last few years.

What is mutagenesis? It is a method of growing crops, using simulated and synthetic versions of what the sun does naturally, thus creating herbicide resistant crops. Who uses it? Monsanto (of course), DuPont, BASF, and Syngenta. When did it start? 1959 was a specifically stated year by Bloomberg Businessweek. Post WWII military to private research and development era is a safe assumption to make. Where? Japan and the good old US of A are the predominant places for this chemically assisted fertile soil. Why do you need to know about mutagenesis? It is unregulated and is where companies like Monsanto will go to exclusively if GMO labeling becomes required by law.  If that doesn’t make you think or cringe, I got one more for you. The amount of money made on mutant plants is officially tracked by the United Nations’ NUCLEAR Techniques in Food and Agriculture program.

Repeat that last line out loud a few times to yourself, then to someone else, then act accordingly.

Why no online sales tax? A 1992 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Quill Corp v. North Dakota where it was ruled a business needed a physical presence (ie office, store, etc) to collect sales tax as opposed to just a paying customer. How was this ruling maintained for two decades? The Direct Marketing Association‘s lobbying on behalf of online behemoths like Amazon and eBay. What could force sales taxes onto online purchases? The Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013. Who? The bill was sponsored by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin. When do you have to start paying taxes on your online purchases? You already do in 24 states. However, surprise surprise there is a loophole and congressional gridlock holding up progress.

States must simplify their sales tax laws in order to make the collection of taxes easy. Apparatus is being provided to states free of cost to help in the transitory process/period. However, a certain political party is objecting to a new tax of any kind being put on the books. I’ll give you one guess which one, hint hint, it’s not the Whigs. In October it appeared as though the machine and momentum were both rolling in the direction of sales tax collection on all internet purchases made in the United States. But never underestimate what congressional obstructionism has the power to not do.

Even if the bill were to pass tomorrow it is already too late for the thousands of brick and mortar stores that shut down and the millions of people who lost their jobs due to being unable to compete in a game rigged against them by a law that protects e retailers created before they existed. There is hope for the future. Small businesses that are better able to adapt to and engage with technology will find that a new era where the internet is a friend and a tool as opposed to a competitor will equal opportunity and prosperity. Now if only they could get small business loans…

Chris Hero made his triumphant return to the indy scene last weekend.  The matches saw him wrestle a star of the past in “Sugar” Shane “Hurricane” Helms and a star of the future in “The Whole Shebang” Johnny Gargano. Both matches were well received and considered technically proficient at a high level, as should be expected considering all three participants.

It was just a little less than ten years ago that many were calling Chris Hero the next Chris Jericho in the same breath they were calling CM Punk the next Shawn Michaels. In the years that followed, one of those two defied their indy guy label and physique to break through the glass ceiling from rassler to pop culture relevant sports entertainer. The other just made his return to the indy scene.

Chris Hero’s release was greeted with a lot of shock from internet wrestling fans. Wasn’t his arrival to WWE developmental delayed by six months due to some kind of failed test?   I’m not too sure because that fact got blurred into a haze of his bouncing moobs during his entrance at ROH Final Battle 2011. Speaking of moobs, let’s get to the heart of why Kassius Ohno is no more.

There are two kinds of things in this world. Those things we have direct control over and those that we don’t. What we don’t have direct control over we can only put focus, energy, and effort toward influencing. A good physique is required to get over in the WWE unless you are a super heavyweight (Gorilla Monsoon, Yokozuna, Great Khali, Kane). CM Punk didn’t change this, nor could he. The bodybuilder archetype is a product of Vince Sr., only elevated by his son. Before Hogan, Cena, Warrior, and Batista there was Bruno Sammartino, Superstar Billy Graham, Rocky Johnson, Tony Atlas and so on.

From the day Hero signed his contract he had body related issues, why did Claudio get to NXT months before him if they were signed at the same time?  Lifting weights is tedious if you aren’t being paid to do it full time. It is made clear what people signed to WWE Developmental are supposed to do with their time. Do work in the ring, in the weight room, on the treadmill, in the tanning bed, watch tape, ask questions, don’t fail a drug test or get arrested, find and develop a character and mic/promo skills, and hit the weight room again.  Did I miss something?

I have seen Chris Hero wrestle in person well over a dozen times. He doesn’t need help on the mic, doesn’t need help in the ring, his cardio is solid, his character can use some distinguishing, and if he was tan enough for HDNet cameras he is tan enough for WWE cameras.  But, the elephant in the room is not Chris Hero’s physique, it is his attitude toward developing it.

It was reported that Triple H personally squashed Hero’s main roster elevation this year over physique and conditioning concerns. Anyone who says they are surprised this happened is lying or ignorant, and not just because of Triple H’s history of squashing pushes. The last time Chris Hero’s physique wasn’t an issue for him was when he still wore shirts and pants. I thought when he got to developmental, his instructions would have been to lift weights five days a week, learn to work for hard camera the sixth, and rest on the seventh.

Chris Hero is a great worker, a mechanic with natural charisma which for me is the ideal combination. He also has size, all he needed was the physique. If he was unwilling to put in the time and supplements to get in shape for vanity purposes, that it is his failure not the WWE’s. 21 months is more than enough time to develop abs, grow lean muscle, clean bulk up, and then cut down WWE’s ideal size/look when you are 6’4.

Hopefully he gets the message and hears the wake up call. What are those? That what he does and the way he does it has reached its pinnacle which in this case is a plateau. To get to the next level he’ll have to do things differently. His move set doesn’t need to change, his hair or beard don’t need to be shaved, his attire doesn’t need an over haul, he doesn’t need to cease being a hip hop enthusiast.

Much like Colt Cabana found The Art of Wrestling to elevate his status, Chris Hero can do the same with learning to love and cultivating the habit of regular weight training.  Tastes can evolve, the brain is like plastic, he can learn to like it, can learn to be good at it, can make it part of his lifestyle, which will in turn open up new doors that have and are presently closed to him.

I empathize with his self imposed plight. Weight training is hard. I myself have lost 60 lbs over the past year and easy is not a word I would use to describe the process in any way, shape, or form. I am about to start clean bulking up 40 lbs over what is likely to be an extended period of time. Again it will be hard, probably would be less hard if WWE moved me to Orlando and paid me to train for two years, just saying.

Don’t know what you got till it’s gone will in my estimation be how this period is remembered two or three years from now when Kassius Ohno and Antonio Cesaro are challenging for the WWE Tag Titles. I think Hero will wake up in a cold sweat on a cold night in Ohio and realize what he had and will have the fire lit under his ass to do everything he can to try and get it back.  That fire under his ass, that is why he got released, because that is what he’ s missing in WWE’s eyes, not just that 20 extra pounds of lean mass.

Michael Hastings was/is a genuine inspiration to me and should be for anyone who respects, admires, or is merely a consumer of journalism.  He was fearless in his reporting, he had no political alliances, his only allegiance was to the truth.  His death earlier this year was/is clouded in sketchiness.  He is certainly someone who is on my hero wall.  I do hope his demise will inspire and embolden others rather than scare or bewilder.

This is a great article for anyone who knows or is unaware of Michael Hastings and I strongly encourage a full reading or at least a skimming.  Even a grazing of the material will net some dense information of importance to people who value freedom and information.
