Is there a difference between societal norms and cultural norms?

Have either of those changed in the past generation (20 years)?

How about the past half century?

Living at home with oneā€™s parents into adulthood used to be akin to the scarlet letter. At least for men. A forehead tattoo with a capital L for the child, and there parents.

Go to school, get a job, get married, have kids, retire, dieā€¦

Millennials and Gen Z went to school, more than any other generation in history. Millennials and Gen Z got jobs. Yet more of us are living at home with our parents than ever before.

Nearly half of adults under 30? Thatā€™s a lot of lazy freeloaders. Or is it something else?

Are the most educated generations of men and women in history failing the system or is the system failing them? Are they failing society or is society failing them? Are they failing culture or is culture failing them?

Wages hadnā€™t kept up with productivity for half a century before the pandemic and the historic aftershocks of inflation. How many mind fucks can developing brains take before theyā€™re permanently fried?

Both my parents are dead, so Iā€™m happy to hear so many people 18-29 have living parents that they can live with. But I have a feeling they would rather leave the nest if they didnā€™t have to choose between rent and eating.

An upside to living at home is that it gives more time for organizing.

The empirical data on this issue seems to keep moving in one direction. Capitalist bootlickers will gaslight and deny saying that unemployment and the stock market are doing better than ever. As if either of those things has anything to do with suffering and quality of life for actual human beings.

Every year, every election cycle, every generation the rank and file seem to be asked to take less, do more, have less, save more, enjoy less, suffer more, think less, feel less, be less so that those with the most can have that much more.

Is this sustainable? Is this ethical? Is this tolerable? Is this how itā€™s always been? Is this how it will always be?

A government of the people, by the people, for the people in a world where cash rules everything around me.

Weā€™re getting closer to the traditional national gaslighting of people to vote for the lesser of two evils. Gaslighting and voter shaming being the only options left of a corporate captured media and government.

Keep the facade going, thereā€™s motions to go through. Thereā€™s time slots to fill, content to create, and appearances to make.

If people can barely survive after a decade which saw both political parties have control of government at one point or another, what is the point of voting? Unless voting third party. Thatā€™s where the gaslighting and voter shaming come into play. I wonder what Jill Stein will be blamed for this election season.

What a better life? GET A JOB! So then what do I need to participate in the farce of the decaying corpse of democracy for? Donā€™t super delegates pick who runs in the general election anyway? Doesnā€™t the electoral college mean that only a few swing states decide the presidential election anyway?

If voting was so important why isnā€™t it a national holiday? Like it is in other countriesā€¦

Vote local? Well thatā€™s where I can see one vote having some value. Probably why we never hear about local elections. Hard to make us hate our neighbors over referendums and country treasurer battles.

If the masses are doing worse than they were before, habitually, for generationsā€¦what good is government? What is the point of elections?

Political theater, divide and conquer, evoke emotions, distract, tribalismā€¦

How else can the 1% get the 99% to hate each other?

Red hates Blue

Blue hates Red

Elephant hates Donkey

Donkey hates Elephant

Blue Collar hates White Collar

White Collar hates Blue Collar

North hates South

South hates North

Half the country hates the other half

What a shame, what a waste, what a farceā€¦

In America, we donā€™t have a democracy, we have economic totalitarianism.

One must pay attention, and do just a baseline level of research to find this truth although it becomes more obvious every year. The economic elites find less and less need to hide it. Itā€™s becoming more common to say the quiet part out loud, in the open, on live mics on livestreams.

Keep the masses running the rate race fueled by promises and propaganda. Coerce them to work for a living until theyā€™re burned out, bankrupt, or dead.

Just go along to get along. Gotta make rent, gotta put the groceries on credit. Canā€™t attend the protest cause Iā€™m out of PTO, canā€™t take my PTO cause my copay went up again, canā€™t afford my copay cause groceries got more expensive for the forth year in a row.

What a shame, what a waste, what a farceā€¦

Awareness is the way out.

Even the most propagandized, corporate captured, patriotic, colonizer friendly American voter has to know something is up, something is amiss to have the same two candidates in back to back presidential elections, with one candidate being the front runner for a third consecutive election.

No one ever went broke under estimating the intelligence of the American people.

America is the most propagandized country on Earth by such a wide margin. North Korea only gets it from the government. In America, our citizenry gets it from the Military Industrial Complex, Big Pharma, Big Oil, Wall Street, and Corporate America literally every time they look at a screen. And screens are everywhere now.

People who are pro Trump and pro Bidenā€¦know something is aloof here.

But to think about it, to question it, is the end of bliss. Because ignorance is bliss.

As the late great George Carlin (the original, not the AI remake) would sayā€¦ ā€œthe owners of this countryā€ ā€¦andā€¦ ā€œitā€™s a big club, and you ainā€™t in itā€ā€¦

The populace is so docile and scared in America that the money in control of the political duopoly that is American politics wonā€™t be bothered to change the wrapper anymore. Itā€™s all Ronald Regan anyway. If they could, they would put him as an AI on the ballot, and thatā€™s probably not far off.

There is an counter force. Vote third party. Vote local. Organize to push ballot initiatives and referendums. Politics is bottom up. All politics is local is the old saying. Thatā€™s the long game. The long game is the only option. And the only thing we have less of than patience is attention.

If people are struggling to pay their rent and bills at historic levels, if income inequality is at historic levels, then why would the populace treat the presidential election like anything other than another reality tv show. A reality tv show host is a duopoly front runner for the third election in a row after all.

When the majority of people are completely identified with their ego and thinking mind, then they are reaction junkies. Unaware there is a space between stimulus and response. So they can be trained like animals. They can be taught to react when certain buttons are pushed regardless of repetition. They will salivate no matter how many times the bell rings.

So theyā€™ll fall in line to vote against the lesser or two evils in the most important election in their lifetime for the third decade in a row. Then wonder why nothing changes, why they have more debt, less money, more work, less leisure, more rules, less rights, more fear, less love.

Manufacture of Consent

That term has fascinated me from the moment I heard the term.

Same goes for Social Conditioning.

I used to think people were willfully ignorant to these concepts. As I got older, I come to think itā€™s more of a combination of naĆÆvetĆ© and fear.

Weā€™re hard wired to conserve our energy and effort. This has been, is, and will be exploited by those with power and influence against those without them to keep it that way.

Control.

Itā€™s all about control. Influence. Manipulation.

To do what?

Benefit those in power.

That those with the most have such a scarcity mindset is sad.

The fact that their scarcity mindset causes so much undue suffering to the masses is something worse than sad.

There are so many things in life that we just donā€™t think about.

So many physical things that exist that we donā€™t think about. So many phrases in our language that we donā€™t think about.

Cost of Living.

The term implies that we donā€™t deserve to live. We donā€™t deserve to be alive. So much for the pro-choice crowd. Once the fetus is born, its on its own.

Self help gurus and the toxic positivity crowd like to talk about what a statistical miracle it is to be alive. Good for content, great for someone whose doing well in life to feel even better about themselves. That concept smacks into a brick wall of the externally, measurable, physical reality of any capitalist controlled civilization.

The paramedic will save your life and tell you that it was a miracle, then the clerk sends you a bill that puts you into medical bankruptcy. The politician tells you itā€™s a miracle to be alive in the richest country in the history of the world, then votes against universal healthcare.

Cost of living. Trade ā…” of your life in the service of being to survive the other ā…“ while youā€™re not working. Five days on for two days off. Fifty weeks on for two weeks off. If youā€™re a worker with a white collar maybe. What is a weekend? What is a holiday? Sick days? Suck it up and turn your gear on the machine plebe.

Cost of living. You mean the mental and emotional toll that simply existing, maintaining sanity and decorum takes on us? You mean the unanswerable questions about existence? What is consciousness? What happens when we die?

The consequences of the body decaying as we get older as the positive alternative to dying young? The feeling of being alone in rooms full of strangers? Wondering if anyone will ever really get us? Not knowing who we can actually trust? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does absolute power corrupt absolutely? What does living up to my potential mean? Are we alone in the universe? Isnā€™t there a risk of dying at any moment? That cost of living?

No, not the immaterial cost of living. The other one. The material cost of living. The one that says if you donā€™t trade your time for money often enough, for enough quantity, youā€™ll be left to die of dehydration and starvation on the streets. That cost of living.
